A 1975 K-State journalism and mass communications graduate, Gloria Freeland joined the K-State faculty in 1983. Freeland is director of the Huck Boyd National Center for Community Media and she is also the School's internship coordinator. She teaches Community Media and Advertising Sales and has also taught Newspaper Management, News and Feature Writing, Community News Service, Principles of Advertising and Ad Techniques. She writes a weekly column, "Snapshots," for the nearby Riley Countian.
Freeland was associate director and advertising adviser of K-State's Student Publications Inc., which publishes the daily Kansas State Collegian, the Royal Purple yearbook and the campus phone book for 15 years.
From 1976-1978, Freeland was a Peace Corps volunteer in Ecuador . From 1978-1980, she served as a reporter, then co-manager of The San Jose News, a twice-weekly, English-language newspaper in Costa Rica. She has also worked on weekly newspapers in Kansas .
Freeland has traveled extensively in Europe and Latin America .
In February 2000, she participated in a symposium, along with faculty members from K-State and the University of Kansas , at the University of Costa Rica.The symposium, " Costa Rica : Human Development and Sustainability — Challenges and Perspectives for the 21st Century," solidified a long-standing relationship between the three universities.
